What is Ewing’s sarcoma, the rare cancer that actor Aindrila Sharma survived twice?

bengali actor Aindrila Sharmawho passed away on November 20 after suffering from a stroke and multiple cardiac arrests, had survived cancer twice. The 24-year-old suffered from Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancerous tumor that grows in bones or the soft tissues around bones – such as cartilage or nerves. She was treated with surgery and chemoradiation.

According to Dr Pooja Babbar of the CK Birla Hospital and Oncology Centre, Gurugram, Ewing’s sarcoma – named after James R Ewing, a pathologist who first described cases of the disease in the 1920s – sarcoma is a type of cancer that can appear in different locations of the body.

What is it and who is more susceptible?

“Ewing sarcoma can start in the soft tissues of the chest, abdomen, limbs, or other locations and spread to other organs or return in the same place. The tumor is mainly found in childhood and adolescenceand rarely diagnosed in adults,” she said indianexpress.com.

The doctor added that Ewing’s sarcoma is “less common in Asian countries than in Western countries such as England or the United States and is more likely to occur in white people.”

“However, there have been cases of the disease found in India over the years. According to hospital and laboratory studies, of all bone malignancies recorded in India, 15.5% of cases were of Ewing sarcoma,” added Dr. Babbar.

The most common early symptom of Ewing sarcoma, the doctor explained, is pain or swelling the tumor. “It can also develop into a visible nodule on the surface of the skin. Broadly speaking, it is a curable disease that has a high recovery rate, but the treatment process can be difficult. The common approach for cancer that has not spread is a combination of surgery to remove the tumor, radiation to kill any remaining cancer cells, and chemotherapy to kill possible cancer cells that have spread,” she said.

The disease can be divided into four different types:

* Bone tumors: It often occurs in the thigh bones, pelvis, ribs, or shoulder blades, but it can occur in any bone.
* Soft tissue tumor: This tumor affects the soft tissues around the bones, such as cartilage or muscle.
* Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor: This type of tumor is found in the nerves and can be detected in many parts of the body.

“When the cancer has not spread to other areas of the body, it is called localized Ewing sarcoma. When it has spread to other places in the body, it is called metastatic Ewing sarcoma. When the cancer returns in the same place or in any other place after a successful course of treatment, it is called recurrent Ewing sarcoma,” the expert noted, adding that after completing all planned therapy, at least a quarter of patients with “originally localized disease “. relapse”.

The doctor concluded by saying that studies show it is more common in boys than in girls. “There are no known lifestyle causes, so there is no known way to protect against this cancer.”
