The joke has a simple format: someone claims they’re about to reveal a photo of their “great-grandmother,” a “human rights activist.” But instead, they simply upload a picture of a celebrity in one of their most outrageous moments.

User @taylorwhateverr chosen a photo by Nicole Richie handcuffed and arrested.
Each meme uses the exact same caption:
“This is a photo of my great grandmother (1960), she was a passionate women’s rights activist. She never stopped fighting for change, refused to be silenced and inspires me every day <3 I love you Grandma.”
But each features an image of a female celebrity, usually involved in a major pop culture moment. Photos are usually grayed out or intentionally made to look grainy or blurry for a retro effect.
