James Gunn used GotG Holiday Special on “Trojan Horse” Vol. 3 Plot

James Gunn revealed that he used The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to subtly introduce plotlines for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.


While speaking with ComicBook.com, Gunn discussed certain elements of the special, noting that audiences will learn a lot about “where the Guardians have been for the last few years” and how they now live in Knowhere. “They have a new ship called the Bowie,” he said. “Now they have a dog as part of their crew who has telekinesis named Cosmo. So where can you learn all of this, and then there are some bigger bits of spoiler news. You will learn all those things. Somehow, Holiday special it was a trojan horse for me to sneak in things that become important Volume 3so I don’t have to spend a lot of time at the beginning of that movie explaining it.”

Relatedly, Gunn said in July 2021 that the special was pre-Volume 3 required viewing, remarking at the time, “You know, [the special’s] in-canon. It’s about Guardians, you’ll learn things you need to learn before you see Volume 3 and it’s great. I’m really, really happy with that.” Gunn also said that in addition to the same actors and many of the same sets, the cast and crew were shooting “pretty much simultaneously with the movie”.

However, according to Gunn, making the special was a cakewalk compared to the work he did for it Volume 3, with Gunn describing the development of the latter project as excruciating and saying it differed from the first due to the special’s sillier tone. “The film is so emotional, but it was a real joy to make it,” he said. “So it’s going great. I still have a lot of VFX shots I’m working on, and of course I’m putting the score together with John Murphy, which is gigantic. So those are the things I focused on the most. , Lately.”

What to expect from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Volume 3Its darker tone was brought up by Gunn in January, as he commented that the film is big, dark and different from what moviegoers might expect.
