Full Sail University and AdventHealth University received two “Made with Unity” recognition awards.

Unity selects Full Sail and AHU for two recognition awards

Full Sail University and AdventHealth University (AHU) were selected to receive two “Made with Unity” recognition awards at the first United Government and Aerospace Customer Recognition and Awards Gala held at the Training, Simulation and interservice/industry education (I/ITSEC) on 28 Nov.

Using the Unity development solution, Full Sail and AHU were able to create proofs of concept for both honoree projects – the Nurse IV Trainer and the DaVinci Xi Surgical Robot Trainer. Unity is a world-leading platform that enables companies to build 3D designs in real-time for various industries from gaming, animation, automotive, architecture and more. Under the guidance of Full Sail University Course Director Dan Mapes and Program Director of the Master of Game Design and Bachelor of Science in Simulation and Visualization Rob Catto, students and graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Simulation program collaborated and visualization from Full Sail and the Master’s degree program in Game Design. along with AdventHealth’s DaVinci Robot Educator Babs Morrissiey and AHU’s Director of Simulation and Innovative Technologies Todd Larson to bring the projects to life.

Nurse IV Trainer is a virtual reality (VR) medical training simulation for doctors to practice IV insertions on a patient’s arm. The technology uses Oculus Quest 2 and SenseGlove Nova Haptic Gloves. The prototype aims to make medical training cost-effective. Traditionally, healthcare practitioners have to learn IV skills on simulated skills trainers that have to be reconstructed between trainees.

The proof of concept Da Vinci Xi Surgical Robot Trainer creates immersive, gamified, virtual reality simulation training for docking applications. The minimally invasive surgical instrument is used to perform a variety of surgical procedures, including gynecological, urological, head and neck, thoracic, colorectal, cardiac and general surgeries.

“Our relationship with AHU has helped our students create projects that serve as proof of concepts for real-world problems,” Catto said. “Thank you to Dan Mapes, our students, alumni and AHU partners for your continued dedication to these projects. To receive this honor is truly humbling.”

In October, Full Sail University and AHU officially opened the doors to the Full Sail University Healthcare Technology Lab Powered by AdventHealth University. The laboratory is used to develop and demonstrate joint health research and projects, to conduct progress analyses, and to expand learning opportunities for students.

“We are thrilled to be honored for these collaborative proof-of-concept projects with our partners at Full Sail University,” said Brandon Baker, MHCI, senior program manager – innovative technologies for AHU. “AdventHealth University is committed to transforming the practice of health care, and these two efforts are outstanding examples of how we can put our collective minds together to leverage innovative technology for leading health care solutions.”
