The 53rd International Film Festival of India came to a controversial conclusion on Monday. The The Kashmir files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, received backlash on stage during the awards ceremony from the head of the jury, Israeli director Nadav Lapid, who called it “propaganda” and “vulgar”. Now, a few celebrities have reacted to this and commented.

At the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), IFFI jury chief aka Israeli director Nadav Lapid took a dig at Vivek’s The Kashmir files and said: “I would like to thank the head of the festival and the director of programming for the cinematic richness of the program, for its diversity, for its complexity. It was intense. We saw seven films in the debut competition and 15 films in the international competition, the showcase of the festival. 14 of them had cinematic, implicit qualities and evoked lively discussion.”

He further added, “We were all disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files. It felt like a vulgar, propaganda film, inappropriate for a competitive arts section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel perfectly comfortable sharing it openly. these feelings here with you on this stage. In the spirit of this festival, it can certainly also accept a critical discussion, which is essential to art and life.”

Now, Anupam, who played one of the key roles in the film, tweeted, “No matter how tall the lie is… It is always small compared to the truth.” He also added pictures from the movie. Take a look:

In an interview with eTimes, actor Darshan Kumaar said, “Everyone has their own individual views on whatever they see and perceive. But there is no denying that The Kashmir Files is a film that depicted the real situation of the Kashmiri pandit community, which is still fighting for justice against the brutal acts of terrorism. He further added, “So this film is not about vulgarity, it’s about reality.”

Another jury member Sudipto Sen also reacted to this and said, “Whatever IFFI 2022 Jury President Mr. Nadav Lapid said about the film Kashmir Files from the closing ceremony stage of the 53 -a IFFI was completely his personal opinion. In the official presentation of the Jury Committee to the Festival Director and in the official Press Conference, where we 4 jurors (the 5th juror had to leave due to her personal emergency) were present and interacted with the press, we never mentioned anything about us . like or dislike. Both were our official collective opinion.”

Film and Television Directors Association of India president Ashoke Pandit also criticized Lapid’s remarks and tweeted, “I strongly object to the language used by Mr. Nadav Lapid on #kashmirFiles. Depiction of genocide of 3 lakh #KashmiriHindus cannot be called vulgar. I, as a filmmaker and #KashmiriPandit, condemn this shameless act of abuse towards the victims of terrorism.”

Kashmir Files, a film based on Kashmiri Pandits, was released in theaters earlier this year.
