Simon Hodgson is a dual-purpose racehorse trainer based in the beautiful surroundings of Yeovil, Somerset. He may be new to the training ranks, but not to the industry, possessing over 30 years experience, including having ridden winners on the flat & over jumps.
After leaving school, Simon’s first job in racing was with the legendary trainer of the north, Charles Booth. His first ride for Charles was on the flat at York, Barry Baby giving Simon the thrill of a win on his first ever ride in public. During his time at Gravel Pit Farm, Simon learned from the best how to nurture and get the best out of young horses, keep the older horses sweet and undertook several trips to France for the winter. When it was time to move on, Charles suggested a National Hunt career would be in his best interests – Simon spent the next 7 years as National Hunt jockey to Toby Balding, that came with such pleasures as riding Beech Road and Morley Street. He also spent 6 years as head lad/assistant trainer to Emma Lavelle.
Our main focus is to ensure all horses are happy and enjoy their job. They have a varied work pattern which keeps them stimulated, and with daily turn-out they are able to unwind and relax. I have learned a lot in my short time as a trainer, not least the importance of having supportive and patient owners – I am very fortunate to have both and I’d like to thank them all.
